Question: is a particular episode a genocide, or a non-genocide atrocity? Justify (4-6 pages):
This is a factual, not a moral or “opinion” question. Include a brief summary of the episode, and lay out the facts and arguments for and against calling the episode genocide, and your conclusion. We will discuss in class.
Guidelines, what to include and/or look for:
1. Summarize event, including background (are there ongoing conflicts, esp defined as racial or identity? Are there real threats?) What is the trigger(s)?
2. Military questions: was there rebellion? Cross-border conflict? Fear of such? Was it a fight, or murder? Interference by other governments? Was it government policy?
3. Numbers of deaths, nature of deaths, causes, perpetrators; aggravating factors (brutality, rape)? Nature of evidence? Believability of complaints from either side? Which most believable? Why?
