Option #2: Medical case study
Introduction: In this research project you will explore a disease or disorder of your choosing. You will need to teach me about the disease or disorder by telling me the following information.
1. Cause/Effect: What is the cause of the disease or disorder and its effect on the normal
human body?
2. Detection/Technology: What are some of the most current monitoring technologies to
detect or symptoms to diagnose the disease? Are there any new advances needed or
being developed in the area of detection?
3. Treatment/Therapies: Is there a cure or is the current medical approach just treating
symptoms? What are the risks and side effects associated with traditional treatments or
therapies? Discuss the risks and benefits.
You have to pick one disease/disorder from the list below:
1. Short bowel syndromes (SBS)
2. Gastroesophageal reflux disease
3. Celiac disease
4. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
5. Asthma
6. Cystic fibrosis
7. AIDS
8. Pulmonary hypertension
For option #2, you may choose to make a poster, write a research paper, or do a presentation.
If you choose to write a research paper, the paper should include:
a. Cover Page (1 page): include your name, class and name of the disease you choose to work on.
b. Introduction (0.5-1 page): Briefly introduce your topic and explain WHY the topic is important or interesting.
c. Body of Paper (2-3 pages): In this part, you should provide detailed information to answer the questions I ask about.
d. Conclusion (0.5-1 page)
e. Reference (1 page): Provide at least four sources of information you use to collect
information. The sources of information must be reliable and avoid using sources such as Baidu or Wikipedia. Information from published books and journals, and government or international non-profitable organization website (e.g. WHO) are recommended.
The layout of the paper should be:
1. 3 to 5 pages (excluding cover page and reference)
2. 12-point font, Times New Roman
3. Double space
