Descriptive statistics allow us to describe the distribution of a single variable. This is very useful when needing to know the how one parameter behaves, but it does not provide a definitive answer to questions like:

Is the mean above a certain value?
Is the deviation less than a desired amount?
How do the results for two different groups compare?

Hypothesis testing allows a definitive answer to such questions. A hypothesis tests consists of several elements:
i. null hypothesis
ii. test statistic cut-off (value based on the specified confidence interval)
iii. test statistic sample (value based on the data collected)
iv. decision to “reject the null hypothesis” or to “fail to reject the null hypothesis”
v. explanation of what that result meets in context

Give an example of a hypothesis test. You may choose an example from the textbook, an example from another source, or your own example. Be sure that you provide a citation for any example used.

For your hypothesis test example, identify each of the following:

1) null hypothesis – Explain this null hypothesis. Explain what the alternative hypothesis is. Explain what rejecting the null hypothesis would allow you to conclude.

2a) test statistic utilized – Specify what distribution (z, t, chi-squared, F, etc is considered) is considered.
2b) test statistic cut-off – What is the percent confidence and what value does that give for the border between rejecting and failing to reject the null hypothesis?
2c) test statistic calculated – What value does the test statistic have for the data?

3) decision – Is the calculated test statistic greater than or less than the cut-off value? Do you “reject” or “fail to reject” the null hypothesis?

4) explanation – Explain what this decision means in the context of the problem. Be sure you include the percent confidence and the null/alternative hypothesis in your explanation.

Use the dependent variable (labeled Y) and one of the independent variables (labeled X1, X2, and X3) in the data file. Select and use one independent variable throughout this analysis. Use Excel to perform the regression and correlation analysis to answer the following.

  1. Generate a scatterplot for the specified dependent variable (Y) and the selected independent variable (X), including the graph of the “best fit” line. Interpret.

  6. Based on the findings in steps 1-5, analyze the ability of the independent variable to predict the dependent variable.
  7. Compute the confidence interval for b, using a 95% confidence level. Interpret this interval.
  8. Compute the 99% confidence interval for the dependent variable, for a selected value of the independent variable. Each student can choose a value to use for the independent variable (use same value in the next step). Interpret this interval.
  9. Using the same chosen value for part (8), estimate the 99% prediction interval for the dependent variable. Interpret this interval.
  10. What can be said about the value of the dependent variable for values of the independent variable that are outside the range of the sample values? Explain.
  11. Describe a business decision that could be made based on the results of this analysis. In other words, how might the business operations change based on these statistical results.

Summarize your results from Steps 1-11 in a 3-page report. The report should explain and interpret the results in ways that are understandable to someone who does not know statistics.

Overview

In this project, you will apply inference methods for means to test your hypotheses about the housing sales market for a region of the United States. You will use appropriate sampling and statistical methods.

Scenario

You have been hired by your regional real estate company to determine if your region’s housing prices and housing square footage are significantly different from those of the national market. The regional sales director has three questions that they want to see addressed in the report:

  1. Are housing prices in your regional market higher than the national market average?
  2. Is the square footage for homes in your region different than the average square footage for homes in the national market?
  3. For your region, what is the range of values for the 95% confidence interval of square footage for homes in your market?

You are given a real estate data set that has houses listed for every county in the United States. In addition, you have been given national statistics and graphs that show the national averages for housing prices and square footage. Your job is to analyze the data, complete the statistical analyses, and provide a report to the regional sales director. You will do so by completing the Project Two Template located in the What to Submit area below.

Directions

Introduction

  1. Purpose: What was the purpose of your analysis, and what is your approach?
    1. Define a random sample and two hypotheses (means) to analyze.
  2. Sample: Define your sample. Take a random sample of 100 observations for your region.

Look back to the raw data you collected in week 1. There are 7 variables listed:

Choose TWO variables that you feel are correlated and explain why you feel that they are correlated. Do you suspect the relation is positive or negative? Why? Which would be considered the independent variable, which the dependent variable? Why?

Run a regression analysis in Excel and provide the results in your post along with your raw data. Looking at the R2 value, explain what this indicates about the strength of the relation.  Then write out your Regression Equation, state if your p-value and conclusion.
