The Belmont report subsequently was adopted as regulations for all research involving people supported or conducted by the US Department of Health and Human Services. The Common Regulations setting out the requirements for: review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), informed consent, and additional protection to vulnerable populations govern all U.S. Government financed research, domestic and international human rights subjects. Polit and Beck (2011) have identified as vulnerable populations: children, people with mental or emotional disabilities, those with severe physical or illnesses, terminally ill people, institutionalized persons and women pregnant. Prior to conducting a study, research plans must be submitted to IRB to ensure that the plans put forward comply with federal ethical research requirements. The National Health Institutes also require that projects supported by NIH meet the current protection requirements for human subjects.

Some barriers or obstacles that can affect effect implementation of EBP in nursing are lack of resources, especially adequate staffing on a unit, lack of education of fellow nurses on the subject matter and support of management. EBP will be effectively implemented when the nurse has done adequate research and understands the subject matter, it’s adavantages and disadvantages in healthcare delivery. For example, if a unit is always short staffed and the charge nurse must take patients as well as supporting the unit with skills and knowledge, she will not be available to function in that capacity. Facilities must therefore take staffing issues seriously so as to free the charge nurse and other resourceful staff members who can help implement EBP and also help others enforce as well.

Studies have now shown that 30% to 40% of patients who are cared for do not get care based on evidence based practice (EBP). As nurses or healthcare providers, it is required to use information on executive skills and offer the best practice to obtain high-quality patient care (Mahmoud & Abdelrasol, 2019). In order to fill the gap between nursing research and practice, it is necessary to enhance nursing knowledge and be devoted to EBPs. One of the reasons why EBPs are not quickly implemented and followed in a healthcare setting is due to the lack of understanding on evaluating a research study among nurses (Mahmoud et al., 2019). Research should be evaluated by understanding its quality and value. Nurses should advance their education and explore the world of research. When nurses are not trained or are not participating in research, it becomes a difficult task to utilize research findings (Mahmoud et al., 2019). For many of the nurses that this learner works with, they are happy to come to work, finish the job on time, and go back home. There are many nurses who are not interested in researching EBPs and give the excuse that s/he does not have time. 

This week you will put together your 72–hour disaster home “go bag” and evaluate your preparedness.

Here are the steps for your initial post:

1. Use the lists available at the Ready.gov website, FEMA, or the Red Cross website to gather items for your 72–hour home go bag. Add additional items that you think will be useful and essential for your family. (You are not required to purchase items, but you may if you choose.)

2. Post a picture of all of the items you have gathered for your go bag. For the sake of personal and family privacy, keep personal/private items out of the photograph; you may list them (e.g., prescription medications).

• You must take and submit a picture of your own items! You may not post a picture from the internet or any other source.

Along with your photo, include the following information:

• A discussion of the items in your home go bag – what is present and what is missing.
• A brief explanation of the demographic considerations and potential disaster hazards in your area and why you included certain items.
• Your family, pets, and living situation considerations and why you included certain items.
• Are you prepared to help others in your community in the event of a disaster?

This is a case with a diagnostic of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus type 2. Nurses often become motivated to change aspects within the larger health care system based on their real-world experience. As such, many nurses take on an advocacy role to influence a change in regulations, policies, and laws that govern the larger health care system.
