Introduction

Information plays a fundamental role in health care. Providers such as physicians and hospitals create and process information as they deliver care to patients. However, managing that information and using it productively poses an ongoing challenge, particularly in light of the complexity of the U.S. health care sector, with its many diverse settings for care and types of providers and services. Health information technology (HIT) has the potential to considerably increase the productivity of the health sector by assisting providers in managing information. Furthermore, HIT can improve the quality of health care and, ultimately, the outcomes of that care for patients.

The use of HIT has been upheld as having remarkable promise in improving the efficiency, quality, cost-effectiveness, and safety of medical care delivery in our nation’s health care system. This assessment provides an opportunity for you to examine how utilizing HIT can positively affect the financial health of an organization, improve patient health, and create better health outcomes.

Preparation

As the senior care coordinator in your organization, your manager has asked you to examine and report on how care coordination can generate cost savings, improve outcomes, enhance the collection of evidence-based data, and improve health care quality for the community. She would like you to compile cost savings data in a well-organized spreadsheet and present your key findings in an executive summary.

Instructions

Determine how care coordination can reduce costs. Compile your cost savings data in a spreadsheet, using Microsoft Excel or a suitable application of your choice. (If you elect to use an application other than Excel, check with faculty to avoid potential file compatibility issues.) Your spreadsheet should contain at least four cost-saving elements. Identify the cost-saving element, current costs, and anticipated savings.

Then create an executive summary using the APA Style Paper Template [DOCX]. Discuss your cost-saving elements and report key findings from your analysis.

1. a.The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, located at 7600 Fannin Street, Houston, TX 77054 is a private organization affiliated with HCA. To help new graduate nurses gain the experience needed to begin work in specialty areas, HCA Gulf Coast Division has implemented StaRN, a Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses. This program focuses on Medical/Surgical, Telemetry, Critical Care Nursing, Women’s Services, ER, OR, Cath Lab and Behavioral Health. Other benefits include educational benefits for you and your dependents including tuition reimbursement, clinical certifications support, HCA Healthcare Scholars Program, Dependent Scholarship Program, and Education and College Advising. In addition, they offer medical, dental, vision, 401k, extended paid family leave, adoption assistance, an employee stock purchase plan, and consumer discounts. 2. b. I chose to research this hospital because it was the hospital I was born at, and I always hear nothing but good things from women about this hospital. My second choice in career paths is NICU nursing, and I was pleased to find that they are a Level IV Advanced NICU. The only drawback I could find was that they are affiliated with HCA, who is known for low pay rates and other negative things, which I won’t speak of in this discussion. In addition, we had our Foundations and MedSurg clinicals at an HCA location and it wasn’t the best experience. After hearing such good things about The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, it makes me believe that it was just that particular hospital with the issues.

a Comment on the hospital organizations’ types of program, education, and specialties offered, vision, benefits, work ethic, and/or cultural climate.

Texoma Medical Center (TMC) only offers an accredited graduate medical education program that covers total healthcare for the area population and their families – this is a Family Medicine Residency Program which will require a medical school degree. With this only type of program available at TMC, I believe this limits the options of new BSN graduates who aspire to get a job position with this hospital because as a new nursing graduate, majority barely have any professional medical experience and transitioning from a nursing student role to a professional registered nursing role will be tedious without a RN residency program designed to help new nursing graduates moved to their professional role smoothly. The benefits that come with working with this organization is a typical employee benefits offered by most employer which include medical, dental, vision, insurance and income protection, retirement & savings, and flexible spending accounts. Compared to most hospital organizations, TMC benefits package is not attractive enough because it does not offer tuition reimbursement like other organizations in the same category. Work ethic and cultural climate at TMC seems to foster a healthy working environment from review posted about the organization as the hospital encourage employees work to carry out the hospital’s mission of providing quality care, delivering innovative services, and exceeding expectations.

Before researching this hospital, what makes it of a special interest to me was that I did my nursing foundation clinical rotations at this hospital. It seems like a great hospital to work, improve, and advance ones’ nursing talent because the work atmosphere, and the great feedbacks from nurses on the unit speaks volume about the teamwork approach employed by this organization. But unfortunately, the hospital does not have a residency program for newly graduated register nurses which I see as a limitation to pursuing employment with this agency.

Let’s start with what the stimulus-response approach is. Basically, it’s a manipulative way to get the prospective consumer to buy your product by asking questions that provoke a specific answer. This is done through what is called a “canned presentation” (Berkowitz, 2010). This approach is highly effective “where the decision issues are relatively simple and similar” (Berkowitz, 2010).

Applying this approach to the chemical dependency scenario, I would first of all be in charge of the presentation, showing a lot of confidence and “dominant energy.” My presentation would definitely include a lot of statistics about drug and alcohol statistics—the percentage of “users” in the world, then those in the healthcare industry, and finally those in “larger medical facilities.” This would create the prospect to wonder how many of the employees in their facility use/abuse drugs and alcohol. Then, I would explain my program and how it targets larger facilities. I think that is the key here; making sure the prospect understands that because this company is so big, it is imperative that there be a program that confronts this topic of discussion. It might be helpful to provoke a thought that the prospect is responsible for the employees going down this path as well. Then I might mention that it can’t be helped and that it’s not their fault (though they will feel responsible at this point) and the only sensible option is to create an assistance program to help these closeted employees with their struggles—particularly, the one I am selling to them. Closing the presentation would include “the necessity” of this program in their company, circling back to making the prospect feel accountable and, in a way, guilty if the program isn’t developed within the company’s borders. I would show the prospect how easy it is to start the program here, and also showcase some positive feedback and statistical results that I have received through other companies that have gone through the program as well.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Berkowitz (2010) defined the stimulus-response sales approach as saying the right thing (stimulus), in order to get a favorable reaction from the consumer/buyer (response). This could be through a persuasive presentation that makes the audience want the product. For example, you can be at a festival where there are multiple people outside dancing. It is 100 degrees outside and the promoter starts describing the ice-cold beverage they had earlier. Explaining the taste and feel of the cup and multiple people might go stand in line for the product now. Since the drink is the stimuli while the response is overcrowded people going to get the beverage. To obtain this, one has to know their target audience and how to manipulate the situation.

If I was giving the chance to create a sales presentation about a chemical dependency program to the employee assistance professional of a large company using a stimulus-response approach this is what I would do.

To open my presentation, I will showcase a testimony of a past client (HIPAA protection). This will appeal to the companies emotion. I will have the client discuss what led them to the facility, then discuss how the treatment benefited them. I will then present facts and figures to the company regarding the dependency usages of employees in big corporations. The figures will list statistics of chemical dependency programs and how they benefit workers and helped the company. I will then go into an interactive session, by asking common questions. The first question will be an ice breaker to make the executives comfortable. When I see the executives are comfortable, I will ask if the company likes their employees? When they respond yes I will say so don’t you think you should add a chemical dependency program to the employee assistance program? (Giving them a guilty feeling). I will follow by going over the chemical dependency program I am offering and how “easy” It is to show employees you care about them. Closing with facts and figures regarding the program and “name dropping” competitors that utilize the services.

Overall, I believe this strategy is a bit manipulative and tries to appeal to emotions to gain a response. To market, I will research the company and use what is found to appeal to emotion to get the stimuli to gain my desired response.
