Assignment: Safety and Agency Responsibility

When you walk into a human services organization, do you think about your safety? What about when you prepare to make a home visit or attend a meeting in the community? As a social worker, you may find yourself in situations in which your personal safety is at risk. Although you, as an administrator, cannot prepare for every situation, you should be proactive and put a plan into place to address issues related to workplace violence in the event that it occurs.

For this Assignment, focus on the Zelnick et al. article on workplace violence and consider what plan you might want to have in place if you were an administrator having to address a similar workplace violence situation.

Assignment (2–3 pages in APA format):

Draft a plan for a human services organization explaining how to address traumatic emergency situations. Include both how to respond to the emergency and how to address any long-term effects. Finally, based on this week?s resources and your personal experiences, explain your greatest concern about the safety of mental health professionals working in a human services organization.

Instructions

For this essay, you will attend a city council, county council, or commission meeting (or a meeting hosted by a similar government agency or group). You will then provide an analysis of the meeting and determine whether you agreed with the steps and actions taken by the council or commission. You will need to explain why you agreed or disagreed.

For students unable to attend in person, viewing a meeting online is an acceptable substitute. The name of the council or commission, location, date, and web address (if applicable) must be included on your title page. Your essay must be at least two full pages in length. You must include a copy of the official meeting agenda as your supporting documentation.

Be sure to include the following information in your essay.

• Include an introduction with a topic sentence at the end of your first paragraph. Example: “The following items from the (fill in the blank) meeting will be analyzed:” and then list each item. These items will then serve as your headers:
  • agenda items,
  • items that required a vote and the outcome of those votes,
  • any contentious issues and analysis of the problem, and
  • any items of particular interest.

Address the questions below in your essay.

• Which people in leadership roles and positions were present and participated in the meeting?
• What community services were addressed in the meeting? In what ways did the council or commission discuss these services?
• Was the meeting what you expected? Would you have voted with the majority? Elaborate on your response.
• How do you think voter participation (i.e., votes that elected the officials to the council or commission) played a role in the meeting?
• When watching the meeting, what community power (e.g., pluralistic, elite) model do you see?

Academic sources should be used, including the textbook, and must be referenced in proper APA Style. The minutes of the meeting should be used as a source.

Treatment/management of sport-related concussion and Post Concussion Syndrome (PCS) is often based on self-reported symptoms. Many athletes are hesitant to report their symptoms. Sport culture can play a big role in whether or not an athlete will report symptoms of concussion and/or PCS.

On July 22nd, Music critic, Mark Swed published a commentary in the Los Angeles Times, entitled Bach wrote BWV 82 to transcend tragedy. It’s a lullaby for our times too. Click here for a PDF of the article.

Assignment:

1) Read the article and listen to the music. If you can’t access Spotify or YouTube, a search of “BWV 82” will lead you to a recording.

2) Reflect on your own response to the music in light of Mark Swed’s commentary. How are your responses similar and how are they different?

3) Reflect on the music you have been listening to the past 4 months (since mid-March). Select one piece that has somehow brought you peace of mind, catharsis, or an emotional outlet. Identify that piece and the artist(s) who created/produced it. Write about the way in which the music affected you, and, assuming that you have listened to this music more than once, whether you ritualized it into your life routines or just reach for it when you have a specific need. In either case, talk about that need.

Response:

1) In your response to a classmate, compare your own response to the Bach with theirs.

2) Listen to the music that they shared (assuming you can find it) and reflect on what role it might play in your life. If you can’t find a recording focus on how they use the music and whether you use music in the same way.
