Chapter 8 of Snipes: Vold’s Theoretical Criminology discusses social disorganization from a variety of perspectives. Begin by defining social disorganization. Then, discuss the factors that are found in a socially-disorganized neighborhood as evidenced by peer-reviewed research conducted as well as personal experience with neighborhoods in your area that would be considered socially disorganized according to your definition.

Using Zoom, you will create an acceptance speech presentation which summarizes your solution from your discipline’s/ role’s perspective.

The Eddie and Ozzie award is presented for excellence in journalism, and one category (which you will be awarded) is for editorial journalism. Acceptance speeches tend to be fairly brief, so work towards less than five minutes. Your speech should be presented to the audience, assuming that many of them might not have read your work.

Your speech should:

• Begin with an introduction, thanking people that contributed to your article series, research, or supported you during your endeavor.
• Stress the importance of the opioid crisis in this country with some descriptive data.

   • Describe survey research and data collection as they relate to your selected criminal justice research topic.
   • Identify a data collection survey method (e.g., in-person, telephone, electronic, or focus group) for your selected topic.
   • Discuss the pros and cons of the method utilized in relationship to the topic and research process.

Discussion: Criminal Justice Strategies Related to a Defense

As a criminal justice professional, you encounter defenses ranging from intoxication to self-defense and from necessity to diminished capacity. Each can alter your thought processes, procedures, and strategies—whether you are police, the prosecution, or the criminal defense lawyer.

For this Discussion, you consider how a defendant who states that they committed a crime, but whose actions were defensible, would affect criminal justice professionals such as police officers, prosecutors, and defense attorneys as they prepare for the case.

By Day 3 of Week 3

Post a response to the following:

• How does the concept of an action being defensible apply to procedures and strategies that you may use—or be required to use— as a police officer, a defense attorney, and a prosecutor when preparing for a case where the defendant plans to state that they did commit the crime, but that they are not guilty because the action was defensible?
• How do one’s actions as a police officer, a defense attorney, and a prosecutor change based on the type of defense the defendant uses?

By Day 5 of Week 3

Respond to two colleagues:

• Choose a response that is different from your own.
• Explain how your colleague’s position has changed your perception or understanding.

Find a local program (city or county based) and a state-level program to use for your Assignment. You only need to discuss two programs. 

Create an 8–12 slide PowerPoint® presentation incorporating speaker notes to include the following: 

• Identify three components of the diversionary programs and initiatives within the programs you identified.
• Compare and contrast the state and local programs.
  • How well do they contribute to successful reintegration services?
  • How well do they contribute to successful and transition services?
• Analyze trends and patterns of these programs as they contribute to reduced recidivism (this may be data driven).
• Relate the trends and patterns to the programs overall validity and effectiveness.  

Discussion Post: Which is more effective in protecting the nation from terrorist attacks: police, or the military? Is homeland defense better operated as a law enforcement or military responsibility? Explain. Should terrorism be treated differently than common criminal acts? Why?

Research Proposal

Each student will submit a research proposal that must be related to the criminal justice or criminology field. Topics outside the criminal justice or criminology will not be accepted and given any credit. The research proposal is a written assignment that includes a statement of the problem to be studied, the formulation of the research question and hypothesis, literature review, and methods section. The paper should be written in Times New Roman, 12 font, 1-inch margins style. It should be written between 6-8 pages in length (introduction, 1-2 pages; Literature review, 3-4 pages, and methods, 2-3 pages in length).
