The debate on whether or not to get a Covid-19 vaccine is at the forefront of many debates. There are apparent philosophical differences pertinent to the vaccine. The writer is in a pro-vaccine camp. This discussion will be the effects of the Moderna vaccine by the COVE Study Group in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The vaccines are used to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease and protect people at high risk for complications. The Moderna vaccine is lipid-based cell that attaches to the virus protein that causes the disease which makes everyone sick. The authors used the vaccine on a trial basis at 99 centers across the country in an “observer-blinded, placebo-controlled trial” (COVE Study Group, 2021). The trial enrolled 30,420 volunteers randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either vaccine or placebo. The 1:1 ratio means that vaccine and placebo were measured in the same proportion. There were positive and negative effects, but the study found that the Moderna vaccine is 94.1% at effectively preventing Covid-19

Dr. Barton Haynes supports the success of the Moderna Vaccine. Haynes suggests that the vaccine is a “medical triumph” because the scientific community is ready from years of technology development for other vaccines, such as those against HIV, influenza. He also credits the rapidly established clinical trials (Haynes, 2021).

Yale Medicine reports that Pfizer has a 91.3% success rate compared to Johnson and Johnson, with 72% efficiency (Katella, 2021). Two other vaccines are being distributed yet in the United States. Oxford-AstraZeneca is currently being used in European countries, and Novavex expects to hit the market at the end of 2021

Other than the effectiveness of taking the vaccine, there are multiple reasons. The shot is free is and has been made available at pharmacies, CVS, and Wal-Mart. A person being vaccinated means they are less likely to spread the disease to others. The biggest reason is that vaccines help get things back to normal—no more masks or zoom meetings. You can sit down in a restaurant instead of taking it to go. More importantly, we can have human interaction again.

The CDC has recently focused on debugging the myths of the vaccines. Receiving the vaccine will not you magnetic. There is currently no evidence support that the vaccine causes any problems with pregnancy. Vaccines do not change or morph a person’s DNA. Lastly, the writer’s favorite myth is the vaccine will not cause you to grow a tail (CDC, 2021). Proverbs 14:15 says, “The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going”(KJV, 2021).  The writer encourages the reader to be smart and do what is best for their family. No, the vaccine is not a 100% guarantee, but neither is a seatbelt but we all use them every day.
