you are to read current news articles about Latin America from the website for the North American Congress of Latin America (NACLA) and submit three short reviews during the semester.  Please submit one review per due date.  Each review is to be at least 3-4 pages and each due date corresponds to a regional topic in Latin America.  The due dates for these reports are June 25 and July 9. Here are the regional topics corresponding to each due date:

• June 25: Mexico, the Caribbean(Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, etc.), and Central America (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, and Belize).

In this unit’s assignment, you will continue building the research plan you started to develop in Unit I. In a scholarly paper, you will plan your research to answer questions and/or solve problems by addressing the criteria below.

• First, you will design a hypothesis of what you believe will happen in terms of observed change if the study proceeds.
• Second, you will develop a null hypothesis that shows that nothing will change.
• Third, explain how and why your proposed study incorporates ethics. 
• Finally, how do you expect a standard institutional review board to approve or ask for changes to your research proposal? 

Throughout this course, you have researched a great variety of assessments in early childhood. For this benchmark assessment, you will take all that you’ve learned as well as additional research to create a final essay and brochure that encompasses all assessments in two specific areas: Formative assessments and summative assessments. Outside research is required, and you are encouraged to carefully read and review all of the articles and videos provided in the ‘Learning Materials’ section for this week.

Step 1: Write a comprehensive essay in which you discuss summative vs. formative assessment to include:

• Definition and rationale for each type
• Benefits of each type
• Five specific examples of each (5 summative and 5 formative) along with descriptions and details of assessments. Focus on innovative ideas.

The essay should be 2000-2250 words and should address each of the required prompts in Step 1. Be sure to completely answer all requirements in each prompt. Separate each section in your paper with a clear heading that allows your professor to know which bullet you are addressing in that section of your paper.
