For this exercise you need to find 4 photos or reproductions of 4 different artworks that you believe fit the following criteria:
- An artwork that you like and think is good
- An artwork that you don’t like and don’t think is good
- An artwork that you like, but suspect might not be good
- An artwork that you don’t like but have to admit is good
Create a new document or PDF and post an image of the selected artwork for each option above, and then in 50-70 words per example, write about why you chose it. The artwork you choose can be painting, drawing, video, photography, sculpture, or performance piece. It CANNOT be music / songs, a TV show, a movie, something from social media / TikTok, or fashion. It does not need to be a famous artwork, but CANNOT be something you, your friend, or your family has made. You need to cite who the artist is for each piece. The goal of this exercise is to examine our own aesthetic sensibilities and our own criteria for what is “good”. Ask yourself, what makes something meaningful to you? Is beauty important and if so, what determines beauty? What is the purpose of art for you, when does it succeed, when does it fail, and why?
