Create a Family Genogram – Voluntary Activity

The purpose of genograms is to review how personal history and people, existing support systems, or events may influence the client’s care, whether environmentally, physically, emotionally, or biologically.

For this activity, you are to create a genogram of your family (you may use another family, but it’s fun to learn about yourself) and looking for patterns in the relationships among family members. The links provided below help explain how to do this. Draw your genogram either by hand, or you can use any word processing program to create graphics. Look for patterns of relationships in your family, and think about how these patterns have affected you/the chosen family.

1) Self-reflection

Reflect on what you learned during the last 4 weeks and answer the following questions:

1. What do you consider to be the most important or significant concept during the last 2 weeks?  Why?

2. What is the concept that you consider more confusing or less clear, that would need a review?

1. Provide a general description of the study hypothesis [the scientific question that the investigators are attempting to address], including the exposure/intervention and health outcome(s) being investigated. [Your study may have multiple exposures and/or outcomes – briefly summarize these or describe what you consider to be the ‘main’ exposure and outcome]

Improving Public Health Law

Select one public health issue that is a concern in your state. Using descriptive statistics provide an overview of the public health issue. Include the target population, the impact to the population, and the financial costs. Present at least two public health laws that either support or oppose the public health issue that you have selected. Discuss how the public health law impacts health outcomes. Explain if the law should be maintained as it is, revised, or removed and how potential changes would impact the population.

Note: Information related to laws can be obtained through the health department and state websites. Laws pertain to reporting, data collection, treatment, and education regarding public health issues. Examples include public health laws governing reportable conditions or the treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Assignment: Off-Label Drug Use in Pediatrics

The unapproved use of approved drugs, also called off-label use, with children is quite common. This is because pediatric dosage guidelines are typically unavailable, since very few drugs have been specifically researched and tested with children.

When treating children, prescribers often adjust dosages approved for adults to accommodate a child’s weight. However, children are not just “smaller” adults. Adults and children process and respond to drugs differently in their absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion.

Children even respond differently during stages from infancy to adolescence. This poses potential safety concerns when prescribing drugs to pediatric patients. As an advanced practice nurse, you have to be aware of safety implications of the off-label use of drugs with this patient group.

To Prepare

Review the interactive media piece in this week’s Resources and reflect on the types of drugs used to treat pediatric patients with mood disorders.

Reflect on situations in which children should be prescribed drugs for off-label use.

Think about strategies to make the off-label use and dosage of drugs safer for children from infancy to adolescence. Consider specific off-label drugs that you think require extra care and attention when used in pediatrics.

By Day 5 of Week 11

Write a 1-page narrative in APA format that addresses the following:

• Explain the circumstances under which children should be prescribed drugs for off-label use. Be specific and provide examples.
• Describe strategies to make the off-label use and dosage of drugs safer for children from infancy to adolescence. Include descriptions and names of off-label drugs that require extra care and attention when used in pediatrics.

Reminder: The College of Nursing requires that all papers submitted include a title page, introduction, summary, and references.

Toxicological Profile of Household Chemicals

Identify the top 8-10 chemicals in your household used for cleaning or for a hobby you might have. Differentiate these chemicals into different chemical classes to include organic and inorganic, and perform a review of the toxicological risk that they pose to you or your family. Be sure to address the following items for each chemical in your presentation:

• Predict the potential chemical and physical properties and how this chemical could react with other chemicals in your household.
• Describe how intermolecular forces can influence the physical properties of each chemical.
• For each chemical, determine if the chemical is in a gaseous form.
• Correlate the exposure to chemicals with toxicological applications (e.g., is it toxic when inhaled, does it absorb through the skin, etc.).

Your presentation should be a minimum of 12 slides, not counting the title slide and the reference slide. You should have a minimum of one reference, which can be your textbook.

Access the West Fertilizer Company Fire and Explosion Investigation Report . Review the key components of the investigation report (Note: you are not expected to read the entire report. Review only what is needed to complete the case study. Refer to your required reading assignment for specific sections.) Write a minimum of two pages analyzing the following key concepts:

• Identify hazardous chemicals that could have caused the explosion.
• Determine what type of chemical reaction took place, and identify if it was exothermic or endothermic in nature and if it was a precipitation, acid/base, or oxidation/reduction event.
